As Dutch people, we naturally love Gouda cheese. But the love for cheese is formed and made in other countries as well. These are all favorite cheeses per country!
The Blue Stilton? The Bowland? Neither! In England they are a big fan of the Cheddar cheese. More than 50% of all cheeses sold in England are Cheddar cheeses. This is not really a surprise either. The Cheddar comes from England and has been made there for centuries.
Mozzarella is the best-selling cheese in America, followed by Cheddar & Parmesan cheeses. The mozzarella is of course not intended as a tasty cheese for the cheese plate, but in America it is mainly used as a topping on pizza.
France is the land of cheese plates. Since the average Frenchman eats the most cheese per year in the world, he knows better than anyone how to try and appreciate different cheeses. Unsurprisingly, the 3 best-selling cheeses are also real French cheeses: camemberts & brie are the most eaten in France. These are followed by the Roquefort blue mold cheese, making the Top 3 cheeses a real French “Trois Premiers”.
The Greeks buy the most… you guessed it… Feta cheese! This authentic Greek cheese is at the top of the list in terms of sales figures. That is not surprising: many originally Greek recipes such as Bouyiourdi are richly filled with this delicious white cheese.
In Spain you will find Manchego sheep's cheese everywhere. This semi-hard Spanish cheese can be found in every store and is therefore at the top of the sales figures. This cheese has a slightly spicy & salty taste and is often served on tapas boards.
The Emmentaler is already very popular in the Netherlands, but especially in Switzerland this is a favorite! This cheese has a nutty tone which makes it very suitable for use in a real Swiss fondue.
