Swiss cheese

High in the Alps, where cows eat special herbs, the basis for Swiss cheese is laid. Swiss cheese tastes delicious in cubes, but is also a true addition to your cheese fondue during Easter or Christmas. But even if you are busy preparing a delicious casserole, Swiss cheese should not be missing as a topping for your main course. The Zuivelhoeve is the (web)shop where your journey through the Swiss cheese landscape begins!

With four variants, the Zuivelhoeve really something to choose for you as a cheese lover. Do you have ears for a delicious piece of Swiss cheese? We will tell you all about the delicacy from 'Swiez', as the Swiss call their own country.

Emmentaler: the cheese from Switzerland

If you say cheese from Switzerland, you say Emmentaler. Characteristic of this Swiss cheese are the numerous air bubbles in the surface, as you would draw it. This makes the Emmentaler a typical Swiss cheese. The organisms responsible for the holes in Emmental cheese are lactic acid bacteria. These bacteria convert their substance into CO2, which cannot escape from the cheese. This results in bubbles forming in the cheese from Switzerland.

The reason why the Emmental cheese has a shelf life needs some explanation. Farmers used to live far from other Swiss people, so the milk from their cows would spoil on arrival. Milk production did not have to be lost due to shelf life cheese to make the milk.

Gruyère: the basis for Swiss cheese fondue

Do you want to give the holidays a different interpretation than usual? Then complete the evening with Swiss cheese fondue. With Swiss cheese fondue you dip all kinds of delicacies, such as bread, meat, vegetables and the like in a hot pan with (liquid) Swiss cheese. Gruyère is one of the cheeses you need when making this sauce.

The nice thing about Swiss cheese fondue is that there is no need to go for one cheese. You can also add Emmentaler or Appenzeller to it! This creates a mix of Alpine flavours! To complete the taste, add garlic, a dash of white wine, some cornflour and gin to the whole. That's going to be fun! Would you prefer a ready-made copy? Then order a bag of Fondue Kaltbach.

Buy Swiss cheese

Another Swiss cheese that you can buy at the Zuivelhoeve, is Appenzeller. The Appenzeller has a spicier taste and can also be used with raclette. Appenzeller is 'scrubbed' in the production process with certain spices and salt, which has a positive effect on the taste. The cheese owes its name to the landscape of the same name.
