History of the Tynjetaler

The Tynjetaler is a special farmhouse cheese, a real regional product. This cheese has its origins in the Frisian village of Tijnje, on the Gelder farm. Years ago, the cheese makers at De Gelder farm started experimenting with different starter cultures. This resulted in a cheese with large holes. This was actually not the intention, but it did give the cheese its own special taste. Customers kept coming back for that special cheese with holes, the recipe for the Frisian cheese with holes was further developed and that is how the Tynjetaler was created.

Gelder Farm

The Tynjetaler is made on farm De Gelder, in the Frisian village of Tijnje. The Tynjetaler is the great pride of the family business. The milk used for the Tynjetaler comes from the 350 cows on the farm. The milk is then processed on the farm into delicious cheeses, including the Tynjetal cheese with holes. This creates a delicious, honest Swiss cheese with holes.
