Munster cheese comes from Alsace-Lorraine in France. The name Munster is derived from the Latin word Monasterium, meaning kloostthere means. Centuries ago, the monks already made this cheese in the Münster valley. Munster cheese belongs to the family red rind cheeses. Munster cheese is made from raw or pasteurized milk and matures for a minimum of 21 days in special ripening cellars or cells. During this period, the Munster cheese is washed every two days in a brine solution and turned. This ensures that a nice, soft red crust is formed. The more mature the cheese, the darker and stickier the crust.

Munster AOP

Munster has had the old French AOC designation since 1969 and since 1996 Munster cheese also has a protected designation of origin. These quality marks guarantee the quality and set requirements for the milk that is used, the area where the cheese is produced, the production method, the ripening time and the quality control. Quality is therefore still of paramount importance!

Taste

Munster cheese has a strong smell and a soft, slightly moist orange rind. The crust is edible. The taste of Munster cheese is sweet-savoury, spicy and intense. Munster cheese is delicious on a baguette and adorns you cheese board, but is also very suitable for use in dishes. For example in a quiche, on flammkuchen or in an oven dish.
